Call of the Highlands

June 12, 2009

w1m
a visitation of cloth draped about you; a pearl
to link the lady therein –
a weave of highlands revisited,
more than just name can give –

amid water of memory cast shallow,
long shadows promise
of virtue filled –
beauty concealing a thread
of unwritten …

word you hold in concord  -
presented by course of the highlands,
the hound stands in
watch of a maid,
draped in a weave;  a the cloth worthy
of life in binding cause -

be it the tartan revealing
my namesake; your heart entwined
that I succumb -
to the bearing, my lass,
my lady, I bow to
the highlands in
pause

Okay, if you went to Scotland, I am SO jealous! LOL! Just kidding. Actually, I would love to go to Scotland, but your poem has taken me there. So thank you for that!

I was going to say the first verse is my favorite, but each one is full of gems. But I do love the pearl, the lady, and the “weave of highlands.” And the next line, “more than just name can give” is beautiful and so true. It’s so good to have you back!

Julie, No I did not go to Scotland, but will be going next summer. My husband is a Canadian Scot and there is a large gathering of the MacKenzie in Scotland next year so we plan on going. I love the Scotish heritage and the games – go every year to hear the pipes and see the tartans. So I am looking forward to our trip.

I needed a break – spent some time with my children and just enjoyed. Thank you for the welcome back.

  4. Good to have you back. I hope your break was just what you needed.

What a lovely poem. I visited Scotland several years ago and images of the Highlands coursed through my mind as I read. You truly are a skillful word weaver.

I could almost see a tapestry in creation when I read:
    “the hound stands in
    watch of a maid,
draped in a weave; a the cloth worthy
of life in binding cause -”

I would like to wear such a garment one day.

A very gently flowing poem that captured my heart from the beginning with these words:
“a visitation of cloth draped about you; a pearl
    to link the lady therein”

As always, the lovely picture added more depth for my thought.
